bears weather quiz

5th grade weather guide

QuestionAnswer
what instrument is used to measure air pressure? Barometer
What are the two types of barometers? Mercury and Aneroid
How does the Mercury barometer work? Measures changes outside
How does the aneroid barometer work? Increases changes inside
What can barometers tell? The amount of pressure in the air
What is Altitude The height above the Earth's surface
What happens to air as water vapor is added? Why? There is less pressure because it is lighter
What happens to air pressure as you increase temperatures? Why Gasses speed up because of fewer particles?
What is volume? A measure of how much space an object takes up
What happens to atmospheric pressure the higher you go in the air? the pressure decreases
What happens to the air pressure as you push on a closed system? It increases
Compare the weight of water vapor to the other gasses in the air it weighs less
What do you call the amount of water vapor in the air? humidity
What are the 4 things that affect air pressure? Height Volume Temperature Amount of water
Why can you NOT feel the weight of the air pressure on you? atmospheric pressure pushes in all directions
What is air pressure? the force put on a given area
What layer has the densest amount of air troposphere
Name the 5 layers of the atmosphere in order from lowest to highest troposhere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere. exosphere
in Which layer do all organisms on Earth live? troposphere
How thick is the troposhere? 8-18 kilometers
How much of the air is found there? 99%
What is the layer closest to the atmosphere called? troposhere
What is the air that surrounds the Earth called? Atmoshere
How many layers does our atmosphere have? 5
What is the name of the imaginary line that runs around the Earth's middle? Equator
Explain why during the day ocean air moves toward land? because land heats up faster than water
Explain why during the night air moves from land to the sea Because land cools off faster
What is latitude? a measure of how far North and South a place is from the equator
What are tradewinds? a part of the system called global winds
Descrive the air near the poles cooler, denser and hve higher air pressure
Which direction does air flow? from high pressure to low pressure
Why do winds form? when 2 convection currents meet it causes wind to blow
What are global winds? when wind blows steadily in predictable directions over long distances
what is convection? The transfer of heat through the movement of a gas or liquid
Why does the curvature of the eart affect the amount of energy one gets from the sun larger the angle less energy
What on Earth keeps the temperatures from having extremes? Oceans
WHat is the name of the current that carries cold water from the poles toward the Pacific Equator California Current
What do water currents move around the world? heat and water
Evaporation is the opposite of What? Condensation
What is the name of the current that circulates water from the Southern States up to Europe? Canary Current
What does it mean when it is said that air in contact with water is tempered? Water is warmer or cold in different areas
What is an ocean current? an on going movement of ocean water
what is climate? the average weather conditions of a place or region
What causes El Nino the warminf othe water which creates a different weather pattern. A wetter pattern
Describe the climate near the ocean more mild than inland
Does water temperature change much from day to night? Tends to stay constant
what is an air mass? A large region of air that has similar temperature and humidity
Describe an air mass that forms above warm area of water it will be warm, humid and moist
Describe an air mass that forms over a cold area of land will be cool and dry
what is a front? meeting place between air masses
what happens when a cold and dry air mass runs into a warm and moist air mass? cold air goes under and pushes warm air up
What causes Thunderstorms? a rainstorm that includes lightning and thunder
What is lightning? The spark caused when the electricity in a thunderhead disharges
Why does thunder occur? heat makes the air expand violently. The sound of rapidly expanding air is called thunder
What is a tornado? A rotating funnel shaped cloud with winds up to 299 miles per hour
What is a low pressure closure? low pressue air is surrounded by a high pressure air
When do tornados begin? When warm air moves upward in a thuderhead ceating an area of low pressure
Why do hurricanes form? by warm air rising and cool air replacing the warm air cause a rotating wind
when is a tropical storm classified as a hurricane when wind speed reaches more than 74 miles per hour
What is a storm surge a bulge of water in an ocean
what is a cyclone? a storm with a low pressure center and a counter clockwise rotation
what is a monsoon? a seaonal wind that brings heavy rain
In what two places do monsoons occur? southeast asia and southwestern US
What is Tule Fog? water vapor the air contained condenses and forms ground fog
what is advection fog? forms when warm humid air flows over cold ground or water
what is to forecast to make your best guess before something happens
what is a meteorologist a scientist who specializes the study of Earth's atmosphere and weather
How are cold fronts marked on a weather map blue line of triangles
How are warm fronts marked on a weather map red line with half circles
A jet stream is an example of what type of wind global wind
what causes Jet streams? temperature differences between air masses
In which direction do Jet stream winds blow? West to East
How do satellites help forecast they take pictures of the movement of clouds and storms from space
How do weather balloons forecast they carry instruments that measures temperature, air pressure and humidity
How does Doppler radar forecast it detects the speed and direction of clouds and rain
