Antiinflammatory | A drug that reduces swelling |
Antipyretics | Drugs that reduce fever |
Antitussive | A drug that can decrease the coughing reflex |
BTC | A non-Rx medication kept "Behind the counter" that patients must buy at a pharmacy |
Circadian rhythms | 24-hour cycles of regular biological changes. In pharmacology, this often involves medications affecting sleep/wake cycles |
Expectorants | Chemicals that loosen and thin spitum and bronchial secretions |

Nutraceutical | A food or supplement with added health benefits |
OTC | Non-Rx medicines generally found outside the secure part of the pharmacy |

Federal Register | Houses published OTC drug monographs, and outlines acceptable ingredients, dosages, formulas, and labeling. |
Rx to OTC switch under 2 methods: | 1.under the OTC drug review 2. through manufactuerer submission of added information to the original product NDA |
Reye syndrome | Children or teens that have certain viral illnesses like chicken pox or flu who take asprin, symptoms include vomiting, drowsiness, delirium, and coma. Permenant brain damage can occur and be fatal. |
NSAID SEs | Increase in blood pressure |
APAP SEs | Excessive daily use puts them at risk for liver toxicity |
Diphenhydrmine SEs | Causes next day drowziness in older adults and puts them at risk of falling (beer's list) |
PPI SEs | Calcium absorption is acid dependant. Long-term PPI use causes increased stomach alkalinity which is linked to increased bone fracture risk. |
