Chemistry Part 1

QuestionAnswer
What are all things (matter) made up of? Atoms
What subatomic particle is negatively charged and is found outside the nucleus of an atom? Electron
What subatomic particle is positively charged and is found inside the nucleus? Proton
What subatomic particle has no charge (is neutral) and is found inside the nucleus? Neutron
What is an element made of? 1 type of atom
What is a molecule? Atoms of the same element bonded together (EX: Oxygen - O2)
What is a compound? An element made up of two or more elements that combine CHEMICALLY (EX: Water - H2O, Carbon Dioxide - CO2)
What is a mixture? Can be a gas, liquid or solid and is made of substances that combine PHYSICALLY (EX: sand and baking soda)
What is a solution? Two or more substances that mix EVENLY (EX: Saline solution - water and salt)
What is a suspension? A gas or a liquid that has another substance that is not mixed evenly throughout it -- may see particles floating in it or sinking to the bottom. (EX: Blood - red and white blood cells and platelets do not mix evenly, Oil and water)
Why does blood stay together in the body if it is a suspension? The heart keeps the blood flowing and the blood cells suspended
True or False: Inorganic compounds contain carbon. False - Inorganic compounds DO NOT contain carbon (EX: Water - H2O)
True or False: Living things are made up of more than 50% water. True
True or False: Water is needed for chemical reactions to occur. True
True or False: Water is NOT used to transport materials through organisms. False - water IS used to transport materials
What is an organic compound? A compound that contains Carbon.
True or False: Organic compounds are associated with living or once living organisms. True
What do carbohydrates do? Supply energy for cell processes (EX: Sugars and starches)
What is a lipid and where is it found? Fat or oil that DOES NOT mix with water - they are found in the cell membrane - they are selectively permeable
Which releases a larger amount of energy? Lipid or Carbohydrates Lipids - they are harder for the body to break down than carbohydrates
What are proteins made up of? Amino Acids (organic compounds)
What is a body part that is made up of proteins? Muscle tissue
What are enzymes made up of? Proteins
True of False: Enzymes regulate all chemical reactions within the cell. True
What do nucleic acids store? They store coded information for cells (EX: DNA)
What directs the activities of the cells? DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
