N5 Atom and PT

QuestionAnswer
How are Elements arranged in the Periodic Table? By atomic number (increasing as go along the table)
Where are metals and non-metals found on the Periodic Table? Metals on left of zig-zag line, non-metals on right.
What does the group number indicate about the elements in that group? The number of outer electrons (all elements in the same group have same no. of outer electrons)
Using the data booklet, what is the electron arrangement of Sodium? From page 6: 2,8,1 (2 electrons in first shell, 1 outer electron)
Apart from the same outer electrons, what else do elements in the same group have in common? Chemical properties (due to the number of outer electrons) ie reactivity.
Where are protons and neutrons found in the atom? In the nucleus a the centre of the atom
Where are electrons found in the atom? Orbiting the nucleus
What charge and mass do protons have? Positive charge and mass of 1 a.m.u
What charge and mass do neutrons have? Neutral charge and mass of 1a.m.u
What charge and mass do electrons have? Negative charge and mass of 0a.m.u
By looking at a Periodic Table, how can the number of protons be identified? It’s the same as the Atomic Number.
In a neutral atom, how can the number of electrons be identified? It’s the same as the number of protons (same as the atomic number).
How can the mass number be calculated? Mass number= No. of protons + no.of neutrons
What is the definition of isotopes? Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different mass numbers (same number of protons but different number of neutrons).
What is the relative atomic mass? The mass of each element calculated using the mass and proportion of each isotope present.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
