TermDefinition
Symbol for Power (and unit) P (Watts)
Symbol for Resistance (and unit) R (Ohms)
Symbol for Current (and unit) I (Amps)
Symbol for Time (and unit) t (Seconds)
Symbol for Charge (and unit) Q (Coloumbs)
Equations Ohms Law V = I R
Equations Two equations for Power P = I V P = I x I x R
Equations Two equations for transfer of energy E = P t E = Q V
Series Describe series Circuit Single loop where electrons can flow
Parallel Describe parallel Circuit Multiple loops where electrons can flow
Parallel Does the current split down multiples routes of a parallel circuit? Yes
Series Is the current the same at all points of a series circuit? Yes
Parallel Does the voltage split down multiples routes of a parallel circuit? No
Series What is the total resistance for R1 and R2 in a series circuit? R = R1 + R2
Parallel What is the total resistance for R1 and R2 in a Parallel circuit? 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2
Parallel Is the resistance of resistors in parallel more, less or the same as the lowest resistance Less
Series Is the resistance of resistors in series more, less or the same as the lowest resistance More
Plugs What are the three wires called Live, Neutral and Earth
Plugs What is the colour and purpose of the Live wire Live wire is BROWN and carries the alternating potential difference
Plugs What is the colour and purpose of the Neutral wire Neutral wire is BLUE and completes the circuit
Plugs What is the colour and purpose of the Earth wire Earth wire is YELLOW & GREEN (like our lawn) and it is safety wire to stop an appliance becoming live
Plugs Which wire is connected to the fuse and why is this needed Live wire is connected to the fuse and is required to break the circuit if there is a surge of power
What does AC stand for? Alternating Current
What does DC stand for? Direct Current
Give an example where AC and DC are used. AC => Mains electricity DC => Batteries
Equations Equation for charge flow, current and time Q = I t
What is electric current? An electric current is the flow of charge, usually electrons
What is an Ohmic Conductor? A material where the current is proportional to the potential difference at both ends
Describe the potential difference graphs for ohmic conductor, lamp and diode Ohmic conductor - straight diagonal line passing through the origin Lamp - S shaped curve Diode - Flat one side of y axis then diagonal increase
Why does the lamp provide an s shaped curve? As the current increases so does the temperature, thus increasing the number of collisions, slowing the electrons
What is the voltage of mains electricity? 240v
What is the frequency of mains electricity? 50Hz

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
