Colony A settlement ruled by another country, not by its own people
1682 - Robert de La Salle Claimed the Mississippi River and the lands around it for France
1609 - Henry Hudson Hudson sailed up a river in North America and claimed land for Holland. The Hudson River is named for him.
1497 - John Cabot Sailed to the eastern coast of Canada. Claimed the land for England.
1493 to 1521 - Juan Ponce de Leon Sailed with Columbus to the New World. Settled on an island called Hispaniola. Explored the islands and Florida.
1492 - Christopher Columbus Sailed for Spain and claimed Carribean island
