Conquestadores Spanish Explorers
Northwest Passage A faster sea route from Europe to Asia through North America that the explorers hoped to find.
Contagious Diseases Sicknesses that spread quickly among people. Europeans brought diseases to American Indians.
East Indies Southeast Asia, including India, Indonesia, and Malaysia
Colony A settlement ruled by another country, not by its own people
1682 - Robert de La Salle Claimed the Mississippi River and the lands around it for France
1609 - Henry Hudson Hudson sailed up a river in North America and claimed land for Holland. The Hudson River is named for him.
1497 - John Cabot Sailed to the eastern coast of Canada. Claimed the land for England.
1493 to 1521 - Juan Ponce de Leon Sailed with Columbus to the New World. Settled on an island called Hispaniola. Explored the islands and Florida.
1492 - Christopher Columbus Sailed for Spain and claimed Carribean island
