5 requirements of every patient specimen label

9 individualized information | Unique accession numbers (compatible with the laboratory information system, LIS, or sample #s used to be used for that particular collection time) |
10 individualized information | Special handling requirements such as for pH, temperature preservatives, routing, test codes, or order status (routine, STAT) |
11 individualized information | Collection order of the tubes |
12 individualized information | Which laboratory section will receive the specimen (hematology, immunology, or other) |
13 individualized information | Whom to call for a critical result |
14 individualized information | Smaller labels, which may be generated to label aliquot tubes, pediatric collection tubes, cuvettes, and/or microscope slides |
15 individualized information | An aliquot is a portion of a blood specimen that is removed, usually after centrifugation, and placed in a separate tube for concurrent testing or for future use. |
16 individualized information | Aliquots are chemically identical to the original sample, but should be labelled with information distinct from, but linked to, the original specimen container. |
