Phlebotomy Procedure

After Blood Culture Collection

Numerical OrderProcedure
1 Procedure At the patient's bedside, label each culture bottle or tube with the specific site of specimen collection.
2 Procedure Ask the patient to double-check his or her name on the labels if possible.
3 Procedure After collecting the blood, remove the iodine from the patient's skin with an alcohol prep.
4 Procedure If chlorhexidine is used as the antiseptic, it does not have to be cleaned from the skin (unless suspected allergy resulted).
5 Procedure Document the following: (a) date & time specimen obtained (b) site of specimen collection
6 Procedure Discard the safety needle, evacuated tube holder assembly, or butterfly blood collection set in the sharps biohazardous container.
7 Procedure Discard blood-soaked gauze pads, contaminated items, & gowns or gloves used in isolation room in approximate biohazardous waste containers.
8 Procedure Dispose of gowns & gloves that are not from isolation rooms in appropriate containers.
9 Procedure Wash or sanitize your hands.
10 Procedure Thank the patient for cooperating.
11 Procedure Depart with all specimens and all remaining supplies.
12 Procedure Do not leave anything at the patient's bedside.
13 Procedure Deliver the blood specimens immediately to the laboratory.
