Glucose Testing

Skin Puncture Phlebotomy Procedures

Numerical OrderProcedure
Rationale Point-of-care-testing diabetes mellitus
Equipment Safety automatic lancet
Equipment 3 alcohol/acetone or alcohol preps
Equipment HemoCue blood glucose monitor
Preparation Gather equipment: safety automatic lancet.
Preparation Identity the patient properly. Briefly explain the test to the patient.
Preparation Clean your hands.
Preparation Put on gloves.
Preparation Select the site and cleanse it with antiseptic (especially the side of a finger).
Preparation Cleanse the site with an alcohol wipe and allow the skin to dry.
Preparation Without touching the cleansed site, gently massage the finger a few times from base to tip to aid blood flow.
Preparation Decide on which side of the finger to make the incision.
Preparation Remove the safety lancet from the protective paper without touching the tip, and as you hold the patient's finger firmly with one hand, make a swift, deep puncture with the retractable safety puncture device.
Preparation Wipe the first 3 drops of blood away with clean gauze.
Preparation Gently massage the finger from base to tip to obtain the needed drop of blood. Do not squeeze the fingertip, because this can cause hemolysis of the blood sample.
Preparation Apply the HemoCue microcuvette to the drop of blood. The correct volume is drawn into the cuvette by capillary action (capillary, venous, or arterial blood can be used).
Preparation Wipe off any excess blood from the sides of the cuvette.
Preparation Place the microcuvette into the cuvette holder and insert it into the phomometer.
Preparation The laboratory test result is displayed automatically.
After the Procedure Discard the safety automatic lancet in the sharps container with biohazard label.
After the Procedure Discard the gauze, alcohol wipes, and gloves in biohazard waste containers.
After the Procedure Wash or sanitize your hands.
