Periodic Table
8.P.1
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Matter | Has mass and takes up space |
Atom | smallest particle of matter that retains all the properties of its element |
Proton | positive subatomic particle that determines identity of the atom |
Neutron | neutral subatomic particle that holds the nucleus together |
Electron | negative subatomic particle that determines the reactivity of the atom |
Element | pure substance made up of just one type of atom |
Compound | pure substance made up of 2 or more different types of atoms chemically bonded in a certain ratio |
Molecule | pure substance made up of 2 or more atoms, the same or different, chemically bonded in a certain ratio |
Mixture | an impure substance that contains 2 or more elements or compounds physically together. |
Homogeneous Mixture | Appears the same throughout |
Heterogeneous Mixture | Individual parts can be identified; not uniform throughout |
Atomic number | Whole number on the periodic table that tells us the number of protons (and electrons) in the atom. |
Atomic Mass | Larger number on the periodic table that is the sum of protons + neutrons |
Periodic Table | Scientific tool used to organize all the elements. |
Groups or Families | The vertical columns on the periodic table |
Periods | The horizontal rows on the periodic table |
Reactivity | How likely an atom is to form chemical bonds with other atoms. |
Inert | Atoms that do not react |
Property | A characteristic used to explain material |
Physical Property | A characteristic that is observable and measurable without causing a chemical change to occur. Examples: Hard, Shiny |
Chemical Property | A characteristic observable only when a chemical change is occurring |
Malleable | Physical property : able to flatten the material into a thin, bendable sheet |
Ductile | Physical property : able to pull the material into a wire |
Density | How much stuff is in a given space; Mass / Volume; compaction of atoms |
Oxidation | Chemical Property : when material reacts with oxygen; rusting, rotting fruit |
pH | Chemical Property : measures how acidic or basic a substance is |
Combustible | Chemical Property : How likely the material is to catch on fire |
Chemical Bond | The electric force |
Chemical Formula | Made up of elements and how many atoms of each in a substance |
