Mechanical Weathering The breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by physical means.
Ice wedging Water gets into cracks, when it freezes it expands,this causes the crack to get larger. A type of mechanical weathering.
Wind Abrasion When wind blows sand against rocks it can wear away a rocks surface. A type of mechanical weathering.
Water Abrasion Rocks and pebble s that roll along the bottom of rivers cause the rocks to become rounded and smooth. A type of mechanical weathering.
Gravity Abrasion Rocks fall on one another as they tumble down a hill or mountain. A type of mechanical weathering.
Plants Roots of plants and trees can grow into cracks, when the roots grow they make the crack wider. A type of mechanical weathering.
Animals When animals burrow they expose more rocks and soil to weathering. A type of mechanical weathering.

Chemical Weathering The weathering of rock by chemical means.
Acid Precipitation Rain, sleet, snow, and hail that contains high concentrations of acids. This can cause damage to rocks and man-made structures. A type of chemical weathering.
Acids in Groundwater Acids react with rocks in the ground, such as limestone. Over a long period of time, the dissolving of limestone forms karst features, such as caverns. A type of chemical weathering.
Acids in Living Things Lichens produce acids that can slowly break down rock, lichens grow on the sides of trees or rocks. A type of chemical weathering.
Oxidation A chemical reaction in which an element, such as iron, combines with oxygen to form an oxide. This is what causes rust. A type of chemical weathering.
Erosion A process in which the materials are transported from one place to another by a natural agent, such as wind, water, ice, or gravity.
Deposition The process in which material is laid down.
