Leadership Taking a company and it's employees in a direction based upon a vision
Initiative The opportunity to to act or take charge before others do
Human relations The relations between people, specifically the treatment of people in a professional way
Integrity A code of values, including honesty, loyalty and fairness
Autocratic leadership A type of leadership where one person runs everything and also makes all the decisions without asking others
Democratic leadership A style where managers work with the employees to make decisions
Free-rein leadership This style requires the leader to set goals for managers and employees and then leave and let them do the job
Delegating Giving the managers and employees the power to run things and make decisions
Self-managed teams Group of employees who take full responsibility for delivering a service or a product through collaboration. -Started in Japan and came to U.S. in the 1980s
Describe the qualities of a leader. Confidence, motivation, communication skills, and integrity
Name at least three ways in which an individual can develop leadership skills. By joining a team or a club, joining a group, reading books or taking courses on leadership.
Describe the self-managed team approach and the two ways in which such an approach is organized In a self managed team, the leader is a team player and not a boss. The team either selects one team leader, or each team member employs specialized skills but no team leader exists.
Good leadership is needed in the business world as well as in areas such as government, nonprofits, education, and sports. Why do all institutions need leaders? All institutions need leaders so there is organization going on in the group. A leader would be there so anyone could ask questions, or just someone to listen to them
Why is it essential that a leader have integrity? To make sure that everyone is respected and to make sure that the business runs smoothly
Why are professionals such as engineers and doctors usually managed with a free-rein style rather than an autocratic management style? So everyone is able to share their knowledge and one person isn't running everything. By doing it this way, the job gets done more quickly
Imagine that you have five employees - a bookkeeper with years of experience, two college students who have worked with you for six months, and two high school students who started last week. What leadership style(s) will you use with each of your employe Bookkeeper- free-rein College students- Democratic High school- Autocratic
What are some instances in which self-managed teams will not work? A self managed team wouldn't work if the people on the team don't get along and if some people don't always have the skills to work on their own.
Why do managers who use leadership styles that empower employees have to think differently than those who use the autocratic style? Because they have the responsibilities of the business in their hands.
What traits must workers have if self-managed teams are to operate efficiently and effectively? They must be more goal oriented than task oriented, they must participate, cooperate, and solve problems
Explain how a leader can use different leadership styles? In a workplace with new employees, the autocratic style would be used. If you are working on a group project within a workplace, the democratic style would be used. If a company was giving tasks to the employees, a free-rein style would be used
