Elements of Lit

TermDefinition
setting the time and place where the story happens
Protagonist “the good guy”; the leading character in a story
Antagonist “the bad guy”; the character or force that causes problems for the protagonist
Characters the people, animals, or personified things that carry out the actions that make up the plot. Their individual personalities and the choices they make complicate the plot.
Plot A series of related events that make up a story; what happens in a story
Introduction/Exposition tells us who the characters are and what the problem is
Rising Action complications arise as the characters take steps to resolve the conflict
Climax the most emotional or suspenseful moment in the story
Falling Action the part of the story when the outcome is decided one way or another
Conflict The struggle or problem in the story.
Internal Conflict struggle against self
External Conflict struggle against some outside force
Types of internal conflict character vs self
Types of external conflict character vs nature character vs others character vs fate character vs society
Theme the idea or lesson that the author wants the reader to take away from the story; the underlying message in the story.
Resolution when the character's problems are solved and the reader feels like they know the whole story
