TLHS Phy Sci #6
Acids, Bases, and Ph
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Acid | Produces H+ ions in water |
Base | Produces OH- ions in water |
Salt | Compound formed when negative ions from an acid combine with the positive ions of a base |
Indicator | Compound that changes color in the presence of an acid or a base |
Buffer | Solution containing ions that minimize effects on pH |
pH | Measures how many H+ are in a solution |
Neutralization | Chemical reaction between an acid and a base that forms a salt and water |
alloy | Mixture of metallic elements |
Solute | Substance being dissolved |
Concentration | Amount of solute in the solvent (%) |
Solvent | Substance doing the dissolving |
Solubility | How well something dissolves in something else |
Solution | Homogeneous mixture, can not see the individual particles |
Ionization | Neutral atoms in compounds become ions when mixed with water |
Unsaturated | Can hold more solute |
Dissociation | Ionic solids do this when mixed with water |
Saturated | Contains all the solute it can |
Electrolyte | Produces ions in solution with water |
Supersaturated | Holds more solute than expected at that temperature |
