NASM-CPT Ch. 4 Q&A

Chapter 4: Behavioral Coaching

QuestionAnswer
What are the 5 Stages of Change and their determinants? 1) Precontemplation (not planning w/in next 6 mo.) 2) Contemplation (may start w/in next 6 mo.) 3) Preparation (starting soon, typically w/in 1 mo.) 4) Action (has an exercise routine w/in last 6 mo.) 5) Maintenance (exercising 6+ mo)
What is the inapplicable 6th stage of the original Transtheoretcal Model and why does it not apply to exercise? The Termination phase; essentially when someone no longer has the desire to continue a bad habit without risk of relapse (see: quitting smoking)
What is the Stages of Change model also known as? The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change
Processes of change provide strategies on how to apply BCTs. How would a client's processes change through the early to the later stages of change? In early stages, clients may apply cognitive processes to progress through stages. In later stages, they rely more on behavioral processes for progressing toward maintenance.
What is the difference between a compliment and an affirmation? Compliments use “I” statements (“I think you are...”) and put attention onto the fitness professional. Affirmations (“You paid very close attention...”) acknowledge the client’s strengths and efforts and enhance a client’s self-efficacy.
