6.4 Integers Vocab

TermDefinition
Whole Numbers The counting numbers including 0 Example: {0, 1 , 2, 3, 4, …}
Integers Numbers without a fraction or decimal. -counting numbers, their opposites, and 0
Positive Numbers Any real number greater than 0. Located to the right of 0 on the number line.
Negative Numbers A number that is less than zero; located to the left of 0 on a number line.
Number Line A line on which each point represents a real number.
Opposite Indicating locations on opposite sides of zero on the number line.
Deposit To increase the value in an account when the account owner subtracts or takes money from the account.
Withdrawal To decrease the value in an account when the account owner adds to the account.
Sea Level The conventional accepted base level for measuring elevation; usually associated with the integer 0.
Absolute Value The distance from 0. Always positive.
Distance Space between two objects. Always positive. Found by counting units between points on a number line or difference of two numbers.
Magnitude The relative size or amount of a quantity. Another way to say absolute value.
Compare Using >, <, ≥, ≤, or ≠ to indicate the relationship between two quantities.
Less Than < A relationship showing that one value is smaller than a second value.
Greater Than > A relationship showing that one quantity is larger than another quantity.
Equal to = A symbol that means two things have the same value.
Rational Number A real number that can be written in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not 0. The set of rational numbers include the set of integers.
Convert a Fraction to a Decimal Divide using long division. Don't forget to add a decimal and annex 0s.
Inequality A sentence containing one of the symbols >, <, ≥, ≤, or ≠ to indicate the relationship between two quantities.
Less than or Equal to ≤ A relationship showing that one value is smaller than or equal to a second value.
Greater than or Equal to ≥ A relationship showing that one quantity is larger than or equal to another quantity.
Translate To change into another form.
