Vocabulary for Lesson One

symbolism | The use of symbols to express ideas or qualities in writing, art, or music. |
symbols | A physical object that represents an idea or a quality. |
point of view | The perspective from which a story is told. Perspective is another way of saying "viewpoint." |
first person point of view | The story is told by a character in the story using first person pronouns: I me, we, us. |
Second person point of view | The narrator addressed the reader using second person pronouns: you, your. |
third person | The story is told by a narrator outside of the story using third person pronouns: he, she, it, they, them. |
oral tradition | How a group of people without written language pass down history, beliefs, and traditions that are important to their culture to future generations. |
mnemonic devices | Strategies used to help people remember something. |
alliteration | When the beginning sounds of words are repeated in a line of poetry or a sentence. |
repetition | Repeating words, phrases, or story elements to help people remember something. |
folklore | A type of oral tradition consisting of the stories, beliefs, and traditions of a community or cultural group, passed down from generation to generation. |
