Watersheds

Review of Watersheds Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Water Cycle the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.
Reducing Water Pollution Trying to reduce or remove the contamination of water bodies which includes lakes, rivers, oceans and groundwater.
Surface Water water that is on the earth's surface
Ground Water water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock.
Runoff the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an area of land, a building or structure, etc.
Fresh Water of or found in fresh water; not of the sea
Wetlands land consisting of marshes or swamps; saturated land.
Salt Water of or found in salt water; living in the sea.
Water Pollution harmful substances—often chemicals or microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water
Natural Resource materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain.
Renewable Resource referred to as clean energy, comes from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished.
Aquifer a body of permeable rock which can contain or transmit groundwater.
Fertilizers a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its fertility.
Recycling the action or process of converting waste into reusable material.
Pesticides a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or to animals.
Deforestation the action of clearing a wide area of trees.
Thermal Pollution a rise in the temperature of rivers or lakes that is injurious to water-dwelling life and is caused by the disposal of heated industrial wastes
Algal Bloom a rapid growth of microscopic algae or cyanobacteria in water, often resulting in a colored scum on the surface.
Plume Pollutants released to the ground can work their way down into the groundwater, leading to groundwater pollution. The resulting body of polluted water within an aquifer ppm
ppm parts per million
Sediments matter that settles to the bottom of a liquid; dregs.
Sewage waste water and excrement conveyed in sewers.
Storm Drain a drain built to carry away excess water in times of heavy rain.
Permeable (of a material or membrane) allowing liquids or gases to pass through it.
Impermeable not allowing fluid to pass through.
Pores (spaces between) a minute opening in a surface
Porosity the ratio, expressed as a percentage, of the volume of the pores or interstices of a substance, as a rock or rock stratum, to the total volume of the mass.
Water Table the level below which the ground is saturated with water.
Artesian Well a well in which water is under pressure; especially : one in which the water flows to the surface naturally.
Zone of Saturation The soil or rock located below the top of the groundwater table
Zoe of Aeration gaps between soil are filled with both air and water.
Oil Spills gaps between soil are filled with both air and water
Land Subsidence a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth's surface due to removal or displacement of subsurface earth materials
