Review of Vocabulary for Environmental Impacts

TermDefinition
Short-Term Environmental Changes An environmental change that occurs quickly and affects organisms immediately (causing behavioral adaptations).
Long-Term Environmental Changes An environmental change that occurs over a long period of time which allows organisms to adapt
Traits a genetically determined characteristic.
Subsequence Populations Populations that come after the first generation populations
Organism an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.
Camouflage a defense mechanism or tactic that organisms use to disguise their appearance, usually to blend in with their surroundings. Organisms use camouflage to mask their location, identity, and movement
Adapted Any heritable trait that helps an organism, such as a plant or animal, survive and reproduce in its environment.
Population a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area.
Mutation the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations
Tolerance ability of an organism to endure unfavorable environmental conditions
Abundance an ecological concept referring to the relative representation of a species in a particular ecosystem
Species a group of organisms that can reproduce with one another in nature and produce fertile offspring
Extinct a particular animal or plant species occurs when there are no more individuals of that species alive anywhere in the world - the species has died out.
Biodiversity the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
