Lawyer Stuff

These are the lawterms I have to study so I can be prepared.

TermDefinition
Plaintiff the person that initiates a lawsuit against someone else
Defendant the person, company, etc., that a lawsuit is brought against
Deposition a statement under oath, taken down in writing, to be used in court in place of the spoken testimony from a witness
Credibility another way of saying you are believable when you speak; the ability to appear honest and trustworthy when telling your side of the story
Default a process where the court bars a party (plaintiff or defendant) from advancing claims or defenses because that party failed to do something required by the rules of court or statutes (law)
Docket the way the court keeps track of a case
Abate To reduce, diminish, or entirely destroy.
Abrogate To cancel or revoke
Abut To be adjacent to
Appellant A party who appeals a lower court’s decision, usually seeking to reverse that decision. A party would do this if they lose at court.
