JMO_Plate_Tectonics

Science 8

QuestionAnswer
lithosphere solid outer crust of the earth that is made up of plates
asthenosphere the melted, molten part of rock
Two types of crust (1) continental rock (2) oceanic rock
continental rock features (2) (1) mainly granite (2) very light
oceanic rock features (2) (1) mainly basalt (2) very dense
Three types of plate boundaries (1) transform (2) divergent (3) convergent
Example of transform boundary San Andreas Fault
What type of boundary is the main cause for earthquakes? transform
Feature of transform boundary plates slide past each other
Feature of divergent boundary plates pull apart
What type of boundary makes volcanoes and mountains divergent
Example of divergent boundary mid ocean ridge....continents pull apart causing a rift
Example of convergent boundary subduction zone
Example of convergent boundary island arcs
Example of convergent boundary andes mountains
Feature of convergent boundary plates collide
What types of plates can collide in convergent boundaries? (1) oceanic plates w/ oceanic plates (2) continental plates w/continental plates (3) continental plates w/oceanic plates
island arcs oceanic rock collides with oceanic rock
andes mountains forms from continental rock colliding with other continental rock
hot spots active volcanoes that happen in the middle of a plate (Hawaiian Volcanoes)
Features of subduction zones (1) oceanic crust sinks below continental crust (2) forms chains of mountains and volcanoes (3) forms trenches (4) forms some earthquakes
plate tectonics the earth's solid outer crust (lithosphere) is separated into plates that move over the upper molten part of the mantle (asthenosphere). The oceanic and continental plates come together or spread apart at plate boundaries all over the earth.
faulting the earth's plates stretch or pull apart or slip past each other
What movement is faulting? vertical
Does faulting cause earthquakes? Yes
folding (wrinkling) horizontal movement of plates
anticlines upfolds
synclines downfolds
What is a result of folding? causes mountains and trenches

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
