Science Vocab

A list of vocab words regarding The carbon cycle and Abiotic and Biotic sources.

TermDefinition
Biotic Any living component that affects another organism or shapes the ecosystem.
Abiotic Non-living chemical and physical parts of the environment that affect living organisms and the functioning of ecosystems.
Ecosystem A community of living organisms in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system.
Producer Organisms that make their own food; they are also known as autotrophs.
Consumer Consumer pertains to any of the organisms in most trophic levels in a food chain, except for producers and decomposers.
Decomposer Organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms, they carry out decomposition.
Food chain Network of links in a food web starting from producer organisms and ending at an apex predator species, detritivores, or decomposer species.
Food web The natural interconnection of food chains and a graphical representation of what-eats-what in an ecological community
Carbon Is a colorless and non-flammable gas at normal temperature and pressure.
Photosynthesis The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
Combustion The process of burning something.
Fossil fuels A fuel formed by natural processes, such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms, containing organic molecules originating in ancient photosynthesis that release energy in combustion.
