Chemistry of Living Things

TermDefinition
Compound More than one type of atom in fixed proportions bonded together
Chemical Changes A new product is formed and the reaction cannot be reversed
Element One type of atom-a pure substance that cannot be broken down.
Physical change A change of state (liquid, solid, gas) , size or shape
Endothermic Heat is absorbed in the reaction ( gets colder)
Exothermic Heat is produced /released in the reaction (gets hotter)
Concentration The amount of solute dissolved in the solvent
Reactant Chemicals which are reacting
Product The result of a reaction
Solution A chemical has dissolved- combined
Mixture Two chemicals mixed but not combined or in a fixed proportion
Enzyme Speeds up a reaction
Solute The substance that is dissolving
Solvent The solution a substance is dissolving in
Dissolve Substance absorbed into a solution
Chemical reaction Making or breaking chemical bonds
Reaction rate The speed of a reaction
Conservation of Mass No mass is gained or lost in a chemical reaction- same number of atoms, before and after the reaction
Ionic Compound Compound made up of a metal and a non metal
Covalent compound Compound made of at least 2 non metals
Ionic Bond Bond between a metal ion (cation) and a non metal ion (anion)
Ion Charged atom formed from loss or gain of electrons
Respiration A chemical reaction that happens in all living things. Rate is slow and controlled release of energy.
Combustion A chemical reaction where a substance reacts with oxygen and gives off heat. Rate is fast with rapid release of energy.
Chemical equations Show reactants, and products of a reaction
Catalyst Speeds up a reaction without actually taking part in the reaction
Factors effecting reaction rate temperature, surface area, concentration, catalyst

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
