TermDefinition
Humidity amount of water vapor in the air
Evaporation The process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid such as water absorb enough energy to change into a gaseous state such as water vapor
Dew Point the atmospheric temperature below which water droplets begin to condense
Density The amount of mass in a given state
Condensation The process by which a gas such as water vapor becomes a liquid such as water
Atmosphere the envelope of gases surrounding any celestial body
Altitude the height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level
Air Pressure a force that is the result of the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area; force which air molecules push on a surface
troposphere closest to earth; where all weather takes place
stratosphere home to Earth’s ozone layer
mesosphere a region of the atmosphere in which temperature decreases with altitude; meteors burn up here; coldest layer
ozone a colorless gas that protects us from ultraviolet radiation
ozone layer thin part of Earth's atmosphere that absorbs almost all of the sun's harmful ultraviolet light
ionosphere part of the atmosphere that is electrically charged, or ionized; it grows and shrinks with the depending on the energy it absorbs from the Sun
thermosphere contains both the ionosphere and exosphere; international space station is here
exosphere highest layer of Earth’s atmosphere; where satellites orbit
greenhouse effect a process that occurs when gases in Earth’s atmosphere trap the Sun’s heat
chlorofluorocarbons(CFC’S) a group of chemicals which are made up of only chlorine, fluorine, carbon, and hydrogen; burning these is bad for ozone
barometric pressure the measurement of air pressure in the atmosphere
thermal energy refers to the movement of molecules within an object or substance; produced when a rise in temperature causes atoms and molecules to move faster and collide with each other

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
