Chromosome Vocab

TermDefinition
Homozygous having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes
heterozygous having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes
allele one of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome
genotype the genetic constitution of an individual organism
phenotype the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment
codominance when two alleles cross over their DNA and the offspring will have mixed traits from both parents
incomplete dominance the dominant allele will not fully dominate the trait that it should be affecting allowing the recessive trait to mix with the dominant trait (ie, if dominant allele is blue, and recessive allele is yellow, resulting offspring will have green).
law of independent assortment the allele a gamete receives for one gene does not influence the allele received for another gene
law of segregation when an organism makes gametes, each gamete receives just one gene copy, which is selected randomly
hybrid a heterozygous organism

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
