What is the Earth's core made of? Iron
Since the Earth's core is made of iron, how does this affect Earth? The iron core makes Earth act as a giant magnet.
How many poles does Earth have? Two
What are the names of the poles on Earth? North Pole and South Pole
An important discovery was made about Earth's magnetic field in the 1960's. What was it? The Earth's magnetic fields occasionally change polarity.
What is geomagnetic reversal? The north pole becomes the south pole and the south pole becomes the north pole.
What is another name for when the earth's pole switch from north to south and vice versa? Geomagnetic reversal
What kind of rocks record the history of geomagnetic reversals? Volcanic rocks
What are mid-ocean ridges? They mirror the coastline on the east and west sides of the Atlantic ocean.
What kind of polarity do the rocks along the rift zone of the mid-ocean ridges have? Normal polarity
What kind of polarity doe the rocks down from the ridges have? Reverse polarity
Are the rocks along the ridge older or younger? Younger
As the seafloor get further from the ridges do the rocks get younger or older? Older
What is the seafloor spreading theory? New oceanic crust forms at the mid-ocean ridges and then slowly moves away from the ridges crest.
