Physiology

Week 6 - Articulation and Muscle Contraction

QuestionAnswer
The joint located (during the growth years) between the epiphysis and diaphysis of the long bone. Synchondrosis
The number of muscle fibers contracting depends on: Number of motor units recruited.
Muscle contractions will continue as long as: Calcium Ions are attached to the troponin.
Noninflammatory joint disorders: dislocation and osteoarthritis
Inflammatory joint disorder Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
What type of contractions are most body movements? Isotonic.
The strength of a muscle contraction is influenced by: Recruitment of motor units.
What type of joint is a condyloid? Biaxial.
Aerobic Respiration produces the max amount of energy from: Each glucose molecule.
Painful muscle contractions or involuntary twitches: cramps
Motor neurons stimulate: Muscle fibers
How many muscle fibers do motor neurons stimulate? Some stimulate only a few dozen muscle fibers; some stimulate a few thousand muscle fibers!
Precise movements do NOT depend on: the number of muscle fibers stimulated.
What are three characteristics of an isometric contraction? tension is produced by by the myosin cross-bridges cannot overcome the load placed on the muscle; the muscle does not shorten; it can produce work by tightening to resist a force
If you attempt to pick up an object which is too heavy to lift, which type of muscle contraction will result? Isometric
What three issues may cause muscle fatigue? a relative lack of ATP; high levels of lactate; failure of the sodium-potassium pumps
What is an example of a hinge joint? Interphalangeal joint
What is an example of a pivot joint? head of the radius articulating with the ulna
Isometric contractions can be described by: static tension

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
