fair use the ability to use small parts of someone else's copyrighted work, but only for certain purposes and with restrictions
public domain something free for all to use because copyright has expired or given away
infringement violation of someone's copyright, possibly resulting in fines and jail time
sampling taking small parts of someone else's video or sound recording and putting it into a new composition
education one acceptable purpose of fair use
commentary/criticism one acceptable purpose of fair use
news/journalism one acceptable purpose of fair use
comedy/satire one acceptable purpose of fair use
amount fair use factor--new work may only use small parts from copyrighted work, cannot include heart
nature fair use factor--fact more likely to be covered than fiction
effect fair use factor--new work cannot negatively impact original's ability to make money for creator.
