maximum sustainable yield (MSY) | harvest the maximum amount of resource without reducing the amount future harvest |
ecosystem -based management | harvest resources to minimize impact on the ecosystem and ecological processes |
adaptive management | scientifically testing management approach and customizing an approach |
even-aged | result from the regrowth of trees that were mostly cut at the same times |
uneven- aged | result from the regrowth of trees that were mostly cut at different times |
clear-cutting | all trees in an area are cut at once |
seed-tree approach | small number of mature and healthy seed-producing trees are left standing so they can reseed the area |
shelterwood approach | small number of mature trees are left in place to provide shelter for the seedlings |
section system | only some of the trees in a forest are cut at once |
deforestation | clearing of a forest and the replacement of it by another land use |
old-growth forest | forest that has never been logged |
multiple use | forests are managed for recreation, wildlife habitat, mining, and other uses in addition to timber |
monoculture | large-scale planting of a single crop |
prescribed burn | controlled burns |
salvage logging | removal of snags, damaged trees, following a natural disturbance |
sustainable forestry certification | products produced using a sustainable method |
