Who was Henry Sibley? Head of the American Fur Company operations and a successful business man, he was part of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux negotiations and was the first governor of the State of Minnesota.

What happened on July 18th, 1851 during the negotiations of the Traverse Des Sioux Treaty? U.S. officials told the Dakota the president knew they were poor and hungry and they should sign a treaty to get money. The Dakota didn't speak because not all of their people were there.
What happened on the last day the negotiations of the Traverse Des Sioux Treaty? The Dakota agreed to sign the treaty and were forced to sign a third document that said they were to give the money they got from the treaty back to the fur traders to pay off the debt they owed for the fur trade.
Why was Bdote important to the Dakota? Where the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers meet was origin of the Dakota people.

Who was Stephen Riggs? A missionary that helped translate the treaties for the Dakota. He led the Dakota to sign the third document during the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux signing.
