3.4 Diffusion and Osmosis
Term | Definition |
---|---|
biology | the study of living things |
osmosis | the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane |
permeable | allows all substances to pass through |
impermeable | does not allow any substance to pass through |
semipermeable | allows some substances to pass through |
diffusion | movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration |
active | the type of transport that uses energy |
passive | the type of transport that does not use energy |
concentration gradient | the difference in concentration of a substance from one area to another |
hypertonic | the more concentrated solution or less diluted or less water |
hypotonic | the less concentrated solution or more diluted or more water |
isotonic | two solutions with the same concentration |
solute | the solid part of a solution |
solvent | the liquid part of a solution |
homogeneous | having the same concentration through out |
heterogeneous | does not have the same concentration throughout |
equilibrium | the state in which the concentration is the same and there is no diffusion |
facilitated diffusion | the diffusion of molecules across a membrane through transport proteins |
