Executive Branch Vocab

TermDefinition
Chief Diplomat The President is the chief diplomat of the United States. The President negotiates treaties with foreign governments.
Chief Executive The person with overall responsibility for the efficient running of a company. The head of a government.
Commander in Chief Commander in Chief is in supreme authority/command of a country’s armed forces.
Pocket Veto A veto of a bill that wasn’t intentional by the president or a governor by retaining the bill unsigned until it is too late for it to be dealt with during the legislative session.
Enumerated Powers Enumerated powers are specific powers granted to Congress by the United States Constitution.
Executive Order An order issued by the president to an executive branch of the government and having the force of law.
Executive Privilege The authority of the President to withhold documents or information in his possession or in the possession of the executive branch from the compulsory process of the legislative or judicial branch of the government.
Head of State Head of state, the highest representative of a sovereign state, who may or may not also be its head of government.
Impeach Means to accuse a public official of misconduct while in office.
Inherent Powers Inherent powers are those powers held by the President that are not explicitly mentioned in the United States Constitution.
Legislative Leader Legislative leaders are spokespeople for the entire Legislature.
Party Leader A party leader acts as the official representative of their political party.
