Alamo an old Spanish mission building in Texas where Mexican forces under Santa Anna besieged Texans in 1836
Oregon Country a term used in early 1800s for the region that includes present-day Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, as well as parts of Wyoming, Montana, and western Canada

Manifest Destiny the 1800s belief that Americans had the right to spread across the continent
Gadsden Purchase a strip of land in present-day Arizona and New Mexico for which the United States paid Mexico $10 million in 1853
Battle of San Jacinto an 1836 battle between Texans and Mexicans during the Texas war for independence from Mexico
Santa Fe Trail the route to Santa Fe, New Mexico, that was used by traders in the 1800s
Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo an 1848 treaty in which Mexico gave up California and New Mexico Territory to the United States for $15 million
