Biotic Living
Ecosystem All the organisms living together in a physical environment in a certain area.
Organism Individual living things
Population All the members of one species living together in the same place at the same time.
Species A group of organisms that are closely related and are able to mate and produce fertile offspring,
Ecological Succession The gradual process of change and replacement of the types of species in a community
Pioneer Species The first plants and animals to live in a newly-available ecosystem such as lichens and mosses
Primary Succession Change that occurs where there are no current ecosystems
Secondary Succession Change that occurs in a current Ecosystem
Bacteria Single-celled, prokaryotic organisms
Decomposer An organism that eats dead and decaying matter, returning nutrients to soil and water
Microorganism Organisms that can only be seen in a microscope includes bacteria and fungi
Phytoplankton Microscopic cyanobacteria and plant-like protists that do photosynthesis
Biome A large area with a specific climate and certain plant and animal communities
Genetic Variation The different genotypes within a population.
Commensalism A relationship where one species benefits from another species and that species is not harmed or helped.
Competition A relationship between two species who use the same limited resource
Mutualism A close relationship in which two different species provide a benefit to each other.
Parasitism A relationship in which one organism lives in or on another organism and feeds off that organism
Predation A relationship in which one organism eats another.
Autotroph An organism that can make its own energy; also called a producer
Food Chain A simple, one-directional diagram showing energy flow
Food Web A complex diagram that shows several feeding relationships
Heterotroph An organism that must eat another organism or detritus to get energy; also called a consumer
Carbon Cycle The process in which carbon is cycled between the atmosphere, land, water, and organisms - fossil fuels formed from ancient dead organisms
Fossil Fuel An energy sources formed from ancient dead organisms.
Nitrogen Cycle The process in which nitrogen cycles between the atmosphere, bacteria and other organisms - nitrogen fixed by bacteria into a usable form for plants and animals
