What were monasteries-Lesson 1 They were religious communities , they were centers for learning for people learning to become priests, nuns or church officials
Why was the church so important-Lesson 1 The church was so important because the people in the church were the only ones who knew how to read and write
What was the main goal for every person in the middle ages and what did they think they had to do to accomplish this-Lesson 1 The main goal for every person was to make it into heaven and the thought they had to follow what the church said in order to reach heaven
What was the main role for women in medieval society-Lesson 1 The main role for women was to take care of their homes and their children as well
Did the church/pope have more control over the people or did the king/monarchy and why-Lesson 1 The pope/church had more power over people because they were able to read and write and they held the power to help people get into heaven
What was founded at Cluny, France and what year-Lesson 2 A monastery was founded in Cluny, France and it happened in the year 910
What were 3 problems in the church-Lesson 2 Some of the priests were almost illiterate and had trouble getting through the prayers, some of the popes didn't have the right morals and certain church leaders cared more about their feudal positions rather than their positions as spiritual leaders
What was the Papal Curia and what was it-Lesson 2 It was the pope's group of advisors and they acted as a court for him
What was a Tithe-Lesson 2 It was how the church collected taxes, it was one-tenth of the income from a christian family
What was the center of most people's life in the middle ages-Lesson 2 To follow christianity and it's teachings
What was the main reason for the second agricultural revolution-Lesson 3 The main reason was because of a warmer climate, which helped to increase farm production
What was the commercial revolution-Lesson 3 The commercial revolution was the increase/expansion of trade and and business
Why did a banking system develop-Lesson 3 Merchants needed ways to be able to sell and buy things easily and so they developed a banking system
Why was there a revival of learning-Lesson 3 Trade started to become more popular and people started to learn more about what the people who they were trading with knew
Who was the most important philosopher of the middle ages and what was one of his main teachings-Lesson 3 It was Thomas Aquinas and one of the main teachings was that most basic religious truths could be proved by logical argument
Who raided Britain in 800s-Lesson 4 The Danish Vikings fiercely raided Britain
Who was William the Conqueror and what did he do-Lesson 4 William the Conqueror was the Duke of Normandy and he invaded England after taking the crown
What was two goals English kings tried to achieve-Lesson 4 They wanted to keep their land and add to it as well as gain more power over the nobles and the church
How did King Henry the second strengthen the royal courts-Lesson 4 He was able to strengthen them by sending royal judges to every part of england once a year
What form of government did the French counts and dukes use after the Charlemagne empire fell-Lesson 4 The government that they ruled with was the feudal system
What did Pope Boniface VIII try to enforce on the kings and why did it not work-Lesson 5 He tried to enforce papal authority onto the kings and it didn't work because the king at that time asserted his authority of the bishops
What started the great schism-Lesson 5 Two popes started the great schism one from Avignon and one from Italy each claiming that the other was a false pope
Who/what tried to stop the great schism, what did they do and why did it not work-Lesson 5 The council of Constance tried to stop it by electing a pope to say it was the official pope, but instead they took it as a 3rd pope in the war
Why was the papacy further challenged by and who was the person who challenged them-Lesson 5 The person who challenged them was John Wycliffe and he challenged them by saying the pope was not the head of the church, but instead Jesus Christ
Who was influenced by Wycliffe's writing and what did teach- Lesson 5 John Hus was influenced by Wycliffe and he taught that the bible was higher than the pope
