climate long-term weather patterns of an area: temperature, precipitation, wind speed
Climatology study of earthÅ› climate and factors that affect all climate changes
Normal standard values for a location the data is averaged on a monthly or annual basis for a period of at least 30 years
Polar Zone 66.5 degrees north and south of the equator - least amount of insolation, always cold
Temperate Zone 23.5 - 66.5 degrees north and south of the equator- moderate temperature
Tropics 23.5 degrees north and south of the equator - most insolation
Heat Island climate is warmer in urban areas due to larger amounts of concrete and asphalt, more energy than wooded or grass areas
Koeppen Classification system classifies climates by temperature, precip. and amount and kind of vegetation
Microclimate localized climates
El Nino warm ocean current that occasionally develops off the western coast of South America. causes climate to warm up.
Ice Age periods of extensive glacial coverage over the past 2 million years
Maunder Minimum period of extremely low solar activity
Season short term climate changes, variations in daylight, temperature and weather patterns
Global Warming a result of increased amount of carbon dioxide and other gases increasing the amount of absorption of radiation
Greenhouse effect the natural heating of Earths surface caused by certain atmospheric gases called greenhouse gases
