Volcano Test
Volcano test review- Chapter 3
Term | Definition |
---|---|
volcano | is a weak spot in the crust where molten material comes to the surface |
Ring of Fire | major volcanic belt formed by the many volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean |
Island Arc | volcanoes that create a string of islands |
hotspot | an area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust like a blow torch |
magma chamber | beneath a volcano magma collects in a pocket |
volcanic pipe | a long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to Earth's surface |
vent | molten rock and gas leave the volcano through this opening |
lava flow | area covered by lava as it pours out of a vent |
crater | bowl shaped area that may form at the top of a volcano around the volcano's central vent |
pahoehoe | fast moving hot lava, looks like coiled rope |
aa | lava that is cooler and slower moving, looks like crumbled cookies |
pyroclastic flow | explosive eruptions hurls out ash, cinders, and bombs as well as gases |
active volcano | live volcano, is erupting or shows signs of erupting soon |
dormant volcano | sleeping volcano |
extinct volcano | dead volcano, will not erupt again |
hotspring | groundwater that is heated by nearby magma and it rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool |
geyser | a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground |
geothermal energy | water that is heated by magma which provides clean, reliable energy to use |
shield volcano | lava flows that build a wide, gently sloping mountain |
cindercone | a steep, cone-shaped hill or mountain |
composite volcano | tall cone-shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash |
magma | Molten rock beneath the earth's surface |
lava | Magma that reaches Earth's surface |
At plate boundaries | Where volcanoes typically form. |
explosive eruption | What type of volcanic eruption will you see a pyroclastic flow? |
gases | Dissolved _________ trapped in magma under tremendous pressure provide the force for a volcanic eruption. |
side vent | Magma sometimes forces its way out of the side of a volcano through a what? |
ash | The smallest lava fragments produced by an explosive eruption (smaller than the size of a grain of sand) |
Divergent plate boundary (mid-ocean ridge), convergent plate boundary at a subduction zone (two oceanic plates or and oceanic and continental plate) | What are the three areas where volcanoes form? |
