Genres of Books

Here are some fiction and nonfiction genres every student should know.

TermDefinition
realistic fiction a story featuring characters, places and situations that seem like real life but it is an imaginary or made-up story
fantasy an imaginary story which includes things in it that COULD NOT happen in real life, such as talking animals or magic
mystery a story that involves a crime or puzzling situation that characters, such as a detective, may be trying to figure out or solve
science fiction an imaginary story which may take place in the future or past, often involving time travel and other types of technology that doesn't exist. Characters can be aliens or even humans that have been altered by scientific experimentation
historical fiction made-up stories that center around real characters and events from the past, which seem realistic, but didn't really happen
traditional literature Fables, Myths, Folk Tales & Fairy Tales. These stories have been shared by storytellers over many centuries and often teach a lesson or explain one of the wonders of the universe
biography a story about a real person's life, written by another person
