Geometry Part 1

Area & Volume

QuestionAnswer
Area The size a surface takes up, measured in square units.
Length The distance from one end to the other, how long something is.
Width The Distance from side to side.
Formula A mathematical rule written using symbols, usually as an equation describing a certain relationship between quantities.
Coordinate Shown as pairs of letter and/or numbers (2, 4). Used to show the position on a coordinate plane or map.
X-Axis The horizontal position of a coordinate, the number line that is horizontal.
Y-Axis The vertical position of a coordinate, the number line that is vertical.
Vertex/Vertices A point where: two or more rays meet. The point at the top of a polygon.
Polygon A plane shape having three or more straight sides.
Quadrilateral A polygon with four sides.
Square A quadrilateral with four equal sides and four right angles. Opposite sides that are parallel. Two angles that bisect at right angles. And has four lines of symmetry
Rectangle A quadrilateral with four right angles and two pairs of opposite equal parallel lines.
Trapezoid A quadrilateral with at least two sides parallel.
Rhombus A parallelogram with four equal sides.
Parallelogram A quadrilateral with opposite sides that are parallel and of equal length and opposite angles that are equal.
Triangle A polygon with three angles and three sides.
Evaluate To find a numerical value for it, to "work it out".
Expression One or a group of mathematical symbols representing a number or quantity.
Prism A solid 3D shapes with two identical. parallel bases. All other faces are rectangles.
Rectangular Prism A prism with two identical. rectangular bases.
Edge The side of a polygon or a line segment where two faces of a solid figure meet.
Volume Amount of space occupied by a 3D object, measured in cubic units.
Cubic Units A standard unit for measuring volume.
