4C Chemistry

help studying for Unit 1

QuestionAnswer
Isotopes members of the same element that have the same # of protons and electrons but different # of electrons (hence, their mass # is different).
Radioisotopes decay over time by giving off radiation (particles).
Mass number atomic mass rounded to nearest whole number
Qualitative analysis observing changes in the physical or chemical qualities of a sample
Quantitative analysis measuring changes in the measured quantities of a sample (eg. mass, temperature, volume etc)
Diatomic elements elements that for a bond with themselves ("di" means 2). Hint: BrINCl HOF!)
Spectator ions aqueous ions that appear on both sides of an equation and so can be cancelled out
Polyatomic ions charged ions that are made up of more than one element
Synthesis reaction forms one product
Decomposition reaction has only one reactant
Combustion reaction always forms carbon dioxide and water
Solubility tables tells which ionic compounds would not dissolve in water
Precipitate an ionic compound that is insoluble (and there for solid)
Multivalent metals that can form more than one charged ion
States of Matter (solid, liquid or gas) depends on the temperature of the sample
Valence electrons are in the outermost electron shell and participate in chemical bonds
Lewis Dot diagram Shows the # of valence electrons (same as the Group #)
Ionic bond Force of attraction between oppositely charged ions

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
