Reconstruction period

What did the 13th amendment do? Abolished slavery
14th amendment Gave citizenship rights to freed slaves and they had were treated equally. TN was the only state that had to aprrove.
15th amendment U.S. citizens were aloud to vote no matter their race or if they used to be slaves.
Who had the easiest reconstruction plan? Abraham Lincoln
Who agreed with Lincoln? Johnson
What did Lincoln want? He wanted to set up a new government and get the south and north back together.
What did Johnson want? He wanted the same thing Lincoln wanted but he wanted to create a black code.
What was the black code? This was where blacks could not vote , testify against whites in court and couldn’t serve as jurors
what was the Congress plan They wanted a harsh punishment on the south. They passed the 14th amendment and GA refused and placed it under the authority of Congress
What is a tenant farmer ? They owned most of their equipment and animals. They retrieved 3/4 quarters of harvest. They had a better chance at getting ahead.
What is a sharecropper? They didn't own anything, they had to share everything. Only contributed to labor and legal form of slavery. They only received half of the harvest.
What did the Freedman's Bureau do? This gave freed slaved the necessities they needed (medicine, food, clothes, and etc.)
Who established the Freedman's Bureau? U.S. Constitution
Before the Civil War what was educating blacks? forbidden
Who were the Ku Klux Klan? A hate group who didn't want black to be treated the same as whites. The spread terror
Who was in charge of military rule? General John Pope
How many black legislators were voted in? 30
Who was Henry McNeal Turner ? 1st black chaplain in the U.S. Army. Elected to the House of Representatives. Educated minister.
What happened to the black legislatures? They were harassed and threatened from white politicians and citizens.
What did the white politicians argue? GA constitution denied blacks the right to hold office.
How many black legislators were there? 28
