Definitons for paper 2

TermDefinition
Covalent Bond A sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms
Ionic Bond A transfer of the electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction
Electronegativity A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons
Intermolecular force A weak force of attraction between molecules, ions, or atoms of noble gasses
Mole As the SI unit for amount of substance
Molar Mass The mass in grams of one mole of that substance
Concentration The amount of solute per unit volume of solution
Redox Reaction A reaction involving the transfer of electrons
Oxidation The loss of electrons
Reduction The gain of electrons
Exothermic Reactions (bonds forming) Reactions which transform chemical potential energy into thermal energy
Endothermic Reaction (bonds breaking) Reactions as reactions which form thermal energy into chemical potential energy
Activation Energy The minimum energy required to start a chemical reaction or the energy required to form the activated complex
Acid (Lowry Bronsted) Proton Donor
Base (Lowry Bronsted) Proton Acceptor
Strong Acid An acid that ionises completely in an aqueous solution
Weak Acid An acid that only ionises partially in an aqueous solution
Strong Base An base that dissociates completely in an aqueous solution
Weak Base An base that only dissociates/ionises partially in an aqueous solution
End Point of a Titration End point of a titration is the point where indicator charges colour
Amphiprotic/Ampholyte A substance that can act as either an acid or a base
