Erosion & Deposition
Unit 3 Textbook Unit 8
Term | Definition |
---|---|
weathering | The chemical and physical processes that break down Earth's surface. |
physical weathering | Breaking down rocks through physical processes. |
chemical weathering | the process by which rocks break down as a result of chemical reactions |
abrasion | The grinding away of rock by other rock |
acid precipitation | precipitation, such as rain, sleet, or snow, that contains a high concentration of acids, often because of the pollution of the atmosphere |
erosion | The process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another. |
deposition | Process in which sediment is laid down/dropped off in new locations. |
floodplain | an area along a river that forms from sediments deposited when the river overflows its banks |
delta | A fan shaped land form made of sediment that is deposited where a stream flows into a lake or an ocean |
alluvial fan | A wide, sloping deposit of sediment formed where a stream leaves deposition on dry land |
shoreline | the place where land and a body of water meet |
beach | an area of the shoreline that is made up of deposited sediment by waves and currents |
sandbar | a long, narrow bank of sand in a body of water |
barrier island | a long, relatively narrow island running parallel to the mainland-built up by the action of waves and currents and serving to protect the coast from erosion by surf and tidal surges. |
glacier | a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow |
dune | a hill of sand shaped by wind common in deserts, and along shores of lakes and oceans |
mountain | land with steep sides that rises sharply (1,000 feet or more) from surrounding land; generally larger and more rugged than a hill |
lake | a large body of water surrounded by land |
river | A large, flowing body of water that usually empties into a lake ocean. |
coastline | boundary between shore and coast |
