Spheres of the Earth

TermDefinition
Asthenosphere A zone of the upper mantle of the earth, beneath the lithosphere.
Atmosphere The layers of gasses surrounding the Earth, or another planet
Biosphere Is made up of the parts of Earth where life exists
Core The dense, central part of the Earth
Crust The outermost layer of the Earth, made of rock
Erosion Being worn away over time by wind, water, etc.
Geosphere The solid parts of the Earth
Lithosphere The solid outer part of the Earth, including the crust, and above the asthenosphere
Mantle Region of the inside of the Earth between the crust and core
Stratosphere The second layer of Earth's atmosphere, above the troposphere
Tectonic Plate Giant, sections (or plates) of rock/crust that the Earth is separated into, earthquakes occur at their boundaries
Troposphere The lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere
Condensation The conversion from a gas to a liquid
Convection Movement in a gas or liquid in which the warmer parts move up and the cooler parts move down
Evaporation The conversion from a liquid to a gas
Freshwater Any naturally occurring water, except for seawater
Greenhouse Effect A natural, warming of the Earth. When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth's, some is absorbed and trapped by gases in the atmosphere
Ozone A form of oxygen, prevalent in the Earths atmosphere
Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground.
Radiation Energy that comes from a source, travels through space, and may be able to penetrate various materials.
Salinity The amount of salt dissolved in a body of water
Water Cycle the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land.
