Define weathering The breaking down of rock at Earth’s surface
What are the two types of weathering? Mechanical and Chemical
What is the process for mechanical weathering? Rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by external conditions or physical means!
What happens to the chemical make-up of a rock during mechanical weathering? The chemical make-up stays the same.
What happens to the characteristics of a rock after during weathering? If the chemical make-up stays the same the characteristics stay the same as the original rock.
What are the four types of mechanical weathering? I- Ice A- Abrasion P-Plants A-Animals
What are four other terms that may be used for mechanical weathering? F- Frost Action F- Friction G- Growth A-Actions
Define Frost Action. The alternate freezing and thawing of soil and rock.
What is Ice Wedging? Repeated process that splits rock when water seeps into cracks, then freezes and expands, causing pieces to break off.
Define Abrasion (Friction). the grinding away (wearing down) of rock by other rock particles (pieces) carried in water, ice, gravity or wind
How do plants affect mechanical weathering? Roots of plants grow into cracks & widen as they grow.
How do animals affect mechanical weathering? Animals that burrow or dig loosen & break apart rocks in the soil.
