Skeletal tissues, Axial and appendicular skeleton
Term | Definition |

Ligament | fibrous bands that help hold the various bones together into an organized skeleton |
Bones | rigid, mineralized structures that help perform five major roles in the body |
Diaphysis | main shaft-like portion andhollow, cylindrical shape and the thick compact bone that composes it adapt the diaphysis well to its function of providing strong support without adding cumbersome weight. |
Epiphyses | the proximal and distal ends of a long bone |
Articular cartilage | thin layer of hyaline cartilage that covers the articular or joint surfaces of epiphyses |
Periosteum | dense, white fibrous membrane that covers bone except at joint surfaces, where articular cartilage forms the covering |
Medullary cavity | tube like hollow space in the diaphysis of a long bone, also called a marrow cavity |
Endosteum | thin, fibrous membrane that lines the medullary cavity of long bones. |
Axial skeleton | eighty bones make up |
Appendicular skeleton | consists of 126 bones—more than half again as many as in the axial skeleton |
Cranial Bones | frontal bone, parietal bones, temporal bones, occipital bone |
