Introduction to tissues

TermDefinition
Epithelial Tissue covers and protects the body surface, lines body cavities, specializes in moving substances into and out of the body or particular organs (secretion, excretion, and absorption), and forms many glands.
Connective Tissue functions to support the body and its parts, connect and hold them together, transport substances through the body, and protect it from foreign invaders.
Muscle Tissue produces movement; it moves the body and its parts.
Nervous Tissue may be the most complex tissue in the body. It specializes in communication among the various parts of the body and in integration of their activities.
Primary Germ Layers endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm and within the first 2 weeks after conception, cells of the offspring move and regroup in an orderly way
Proteoglycans give it a range of different consistencies, depending on the specific tissue.
Extracellular Matrix (ECM) tissues differ in the amount and kind of fluid material be-tween the cells
Basement Membrane (BM) a thin, gluelike connection between a sheet of epithelial cells and the underlying fibrous connective tissue.
Regeneration growth of functional new tissue
Keloid atypical and unusually thick scar that may develop in the lower layer of the skin
Epithelial Membrane composed of epithelial tissue glued by a basement membrane to an underlying layer of supportive connective tissue
Connective Tissue Membrane com-posed exclusively of various types of connective tissue; no epithelial cells are present in this type of membrane
Cutaneous Membrane covers body surfaces that are exposed to the external environment.
Serous Membrane lines cavities that are not open to the external environment and covers many of the organs inside these cavities.
Mucous Membrane epithelial membranes that line body surfaces opening directly to the exterior.
Novial Membrane lining the spaces between bones and joints that move are classified as connective tissue membranes.
Synovial Fluid membranes are smooth and slick and secrete a thick and colorless lubri-cating fluid

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
