Water Cycle Voc

Vocabulary- definitions

TermDefinition
spring The result of an aquifer being filled to the point that the water overflows onto the land surface.
surface runoff Water, from rain, snow melt or other sources, that flows over the land surface, and is a major component of the water cycle. Runoff that occurs on surfaces before reaching a channel is also called overland flow. Runoff to a common point is watershed.
sun Drives the entire water cycle & is responsible for its 2 major components:condensation & evaporation. When sun heats the surface of water it evaporates & ends up in the atmosphere as water vapor. It cools & rises becoming clouds eventually to H2O droplets
water resources Natural "RESOURCES" of "WATER" that are potentially useful
permeability Is closely related to porosity. PERMEABILITY refers to how connected pore spaces are to one another
natural resources Materials or substances such as minerals, forest, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and be used for economic gain.
ocean A body of water that composes much of the planet's hydrosphere.
percolation Water travels downwards through the tiny spaces between rocks & soil particles. The H2O eventually saturates the underlying rock like water filling holes of a sponge. This helps replenish aquifers under the ground.
purified water Water that has been filtered or processed to remove impurities like chemicals and other contaminants.
radiation A method of heat transfer that does not rely upon any contact between the heat source and the heated object.
porosity The amount of empty space within a given material. In a solid or rock the empty space exist between the grains of minerals.
runoff Precipitation that did not get absorbed or infiltrated into the soil, or did not evaporate & made its way from the ground surface into places that water collects.
conduction The process by which heat energy is transmitted through collisions between neighboring atoms or molecules.
convection Is the heat transfer due to the bulk movement of molecules within fluids such as gases and liquids, including molten rock.
crystallization Water that comes from a crystal substance after heat is applied. Example: Water that drips off a water crystal hanging from the eaves of a house as it warms up after a freezing rain/snow.
energy transfer The movement of energy from one place to another.
freshwater Water containing <1000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, most often salt.
gravity The force of attraction between 2 objects & Earth's gravity pulls matter downward toward its center. It pulls precipitation down from clouds and pulls water downhill.
groundwater Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock.
glaciers A slowly moving mass of river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction pf snow on mountains near the poles.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
