3U Chemistry

Unit 1 (COVID version)

QuestionAnswer
Diatomic molecule When an element can't exist by itself but must bond with another element or itself
Standard State State of matter of an element at room temperature
Electronegativity The ability of an element to attract shared electrons in a covalent bond
Isotopes Have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Average atomic mass A weighted average of the masses of all the isotopes of an element
Oxyacids Aqueous substance composed of hydrogen, oxygen and other elements (eg. H2SO4)
Bases Compounds that separate in water to release a hydroxide (OH-) ion
Acids Compounds that separate in water to release a hydrogen (H+) ion
Nonpolar covalent bond A bond in which electrons are shared equally
Temperature A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles
Kinetic Molecular Theory All matter is made up of particles that are moving, separated by space and speed up when heated
Physical property An aspect of matter that can be observed or measured without changing it
Polar covalent bond A bond in which electrons are shared unequally and where the difference in electronegativity values of the two atoms sharing the bond is between 0.41-1.7
Ionic bond If the difference in electronegativity values of the two atoms sharing the bond is greater than 1.7 then there is a transfer of electrons from the metal to the nonmetal.
Dissociates What happens to an ionic solid when it dissolves in water...it separates into its component ions
Chemical property This may only be observed by changing the chemical identity of a pure substance.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
