resting membrane potential the membrane potential maintained by a non-conducting neuron's plasma membrane--usually about -70mV
local potential slight shift away from resting membrane potential in a specific region of the plasma membrane
action potential the membrane potential of an active neuron
signal transduction a process where each different hormone-receptor interaction produces regulatory changes within the target cell
synergism a phenomenon where combinations of hormones have a greater effect on the target cell than would the sum of the effects if each were acting alone
hypersecretion production of too much hormone by a diseased gland
perfusion local pressure gradient needed to maintain blood flow in a tissue
stroke volume the amount of blood pumped by one stroke of the ventricle
cardiac reserve the amount that cardiac output can increase above the resting value
Allostasis the active process used by the body as it attempts to restore typical optimal conditions while under stress.
